GLA:D®, or Good Life with Arthritis: Denmark, is an education and exercise program developed by researchers in Denmark for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis symptoms.
GLA:D® uses education and exercise to help with daily activities. You will work on strengthening your body, as well as learning to move correctly and manage symptoms to improve pain.
how can GLA:D® help
The GLA:D Hip and Knee Program is designed for all individuals who experience any hip and/or knee osteoarthritis symptoms, regardless of severity. You may participate in the GLA:D Hip and Knee Program if you have a hip or knee joint problem that resulted in visiting a healthcare provider. Others reasons to participate include:
If you are on a waiting list for a hip or knee joint replacement
If you have been told you might need a hip or knee replacement but are hoping to avoid if possible
If you do not know how to exercise or find it hard to motivate yourself
If you have tried exercise before but it didn’t work (it might have been too much or too little and supervised exercise has been shown to be the most effective form of exercise)
If you worry that when you exercise you might make your condition worse

HOW DO I GET STARTED?
Anyone wishing to commence the GLA:D Hip and Knee Program for the first time is required to register in for an assessment to determine suitability. During the initial assessment your physiotherapist will undertake a detailed history and design your personalised program based upon your needs, goals and injuries. WHAT TRAINING HAVE THE PHYSIOTHERAPIST’S UNDERTAKEN TO BECOME ACCREDITED?
Physiotherapists interested in GLA:D participate in a two-day course giving them the requisite skills to diagnose osteoarthritis (OA) and deliver OA care as described in the clinical guidelines. On successful completion of the course, physiotherapists educated in GLA:D are obliged to follow the principles of GLA:D and contribute data to the national GLA:D registry. Currently all appointments will be facilitated by Rosie.
WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT THE EXERCISE PROGRAM?
The NEuroMuscular Exercise training program for patients with knee or hip osteoarthritis (OA) assigned for total joint replacement (TJR), the NEMEX-TJR training program, is based on principles of neuromuscular training. The training takes place in groups, under the supervision of an accredited GLA:D therapist, and consists of three parts: warming up, a circuit program, and cooling down.
DO I NEED A DOCTORS REFERRAL?
In Australia, physiotherapists are first contact practitioners, so a referral is not required to attend for treatment. There are however, a few exceptions (worker’s compensation claims, Department of Veteran Affairs, motor vehicle third party claims and Medicare claims) where you will need to see your doctor prior to attending.

CAN I USE MY PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE?
If you hold extras cover for physiotherapy and group class, you should be able to claim through your private health insurance. We can claim for you on the day and you will just need to pay the gap.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?
Wear comfortable, loose clothing that is easy to move in. Please bring a water bottle with you.
