ORTHOTICS

What are orthotics?

Orthotics are inserts that are worn inside your shoes, to provide support and/or cushioning to your feet.

They can be used to modify the mechanical movements that feet make when walking or to accommodate for structural changes to the bones or soft tissues.

Cost, durability and replacement times vary depending on the type of device that you have.

It is essential that a qualified professional assesses and recommends the best option for you; otherwise, you could be causing more damage than good. Just like being fitted for reading glasses, the level of support must be precisely determined for your feet.

Care & Cleaning

  • Clean by wiping with a damp cloth to remove any dirt.

  • Do not immerse in water, this will destroy the materials.

  • If they become wet accidentally, air dry them, DO NOT heat in any way.

  • Empty your shoes of dirt and stones regularly.

  • Keep your orthotics away from dogs, they make great chew toys!

  • Orthotics should be reviewed every 12 months, a courtesy reminder will be issued.

Do I need new shoes?

Appropriate footwear is crucial to an orthotic working its best. There is no need to purchase special orthotic shoes, but the following must be present to be suitable for an orthotic:

  • Heel counter: firm and enclosed, backless shoes are not suitable.

  • Secure fastening around the ankle, velcro or laces are ideal.

  • Form sole: bending only at the toes.

  • Some midsole cushioning: this will filter the shock and impact of walking.

Wearing in your orthotics

  • Because an orthotic is designed to alter the mechanics of your feet, your whole body will take a while to adjust to the new foot position.

  • Introduce yourself to the orthotics by increasing wear 1 hour at a time each day.

  • Aim to wear your orthotics comfortably for one full day of normal activity before you start wearing them for sport.

  • Orthotics take a while to settle into each pair of shoes, and may feel like they are slipping. Lacing techniques are available if you are having trouble.

  • Increase use as you feel comfortable and if in doubt, please contact us to discuss.

  • After a few weeks of wearing in your new orthotics, we have a review appointment to ensure their fit, function and comfort and to discuss your ongoing treatment plan.
